Numerous bioinformatics educational tools, mainly genomics-oriented, already exist on the market; many are exclusively theoretical and cover either a wide range but of basic level or are very specialized, but of narrow range. e-Proxemis, with wide proteomics-oriented content of various levels, a series of practical aspects, frequent updates/additions and our point of view, brings something original to the market.
The "Resources" section of e-Proxemis introduces bioinformatics databases and software tools. Resources are grouped by topics and presented operationally. The description of a resource is modular; the more modules, the more detailed the description. "Case Studies" describe concrete situations encountered when using bioinformatics resources in proteomics. A case is in fact a question that needs to be solved with bioinformatics means. A case study depicts a stepwise strategy for searching information that answers the question. A "Scenario" is a series of case studies. Each case study addresses one question at a time, while a scenario relates the case studies and shows how to solve successive and connected questions. "Practice" is comprised of a series of short quizzes used to evaluate users' knowledge level in a given domain, and a series of exercises devoted to practice what has been learned in the Resources or Case Studies sections. Our goal is to give life scientists the bioinformatics background they need through a self-learning platform that mirrors real-world situations with dynamic content.
